Activities from Wild World-Gr K-4

Mapping Basics, Build and Eco-Region & Hippo Posters

Elementary

Description

These three activities from the resource "Wild World" focus on the theme of biodiversity.  The complete resource consists of an introduction, five activities, a glossary and a list of supplementary materials.

In "Mapping Basics" students learn through maps that the Earth is made up of both landmasses and bodies of water. They will also learn how maps can show the distribution of different animals on land and water.

In "Building an Eco-region" students use model making and other hands-on activities to explore different eco-regions and discover how each region supports an amazing array of life.

In the third lesson, students design posters to illustrate the HIPPO concept to explore the consequences of declining biodiversity. The HIPPO acronym stands for Habitat loss, Introduced species, Pollution, Population growth and Over-consumption.

The three lessons are designed for both younger and older children at the elementary level.
